DBF Preview #5: A Better World for Used Books

My relationship with books has been a conflicted one this month. While I blog away about the joys of book shopping and anticipate the events of the upcoming Decatur Book Festival, I also am mired deep in the process of moving, which, for me, includes cleaning out and unloading books. I am joined in this angst-driven task by my companion and soon to be co-homeowner, Denise, who also has many books to cull, especially on scientific topics that reflect her years spent writing for the Human Genome Project.

Well, interests change, and we’ve been trying to find good homes for some of these books. These are not the usual fare than your average used book store is interested in buying, so I’ve turned to other worthy outlets (several boxes going to the Decatur Public Library). I’ve also been investigating Better World, whose mission is to sell used books and donate the proceeds for global literacy, saving books from landfills and supporting the Books for Africa program. Worth noting is that this operation is a for-profit company that works with nonprofit entities such as libraries and literacy programs.

So far I’ve been playing around on their web site and have sent a few books their way (I’ve also ordered a few from them with fine results). Better World is a corporate sponsor of the Festival.

Note:  The Friends of the Decatur Library Book Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 5th on the front lawn of the library. If you notice an abundance of genetics and biology books, well, I bet you can guess where they came from.
